MLB: Looking at the American League on August 17th

Posted on | August 17, 2009 | No Comments

With about 45 games left in the baseball season, each and every game is taking on more importance. So, let’s take a look at which teams look like they’ll be heading to the playoffs at the end of the season. This week there is one big change from last week and a small change as well.

In the American League East the New York Yankees are running away with the division. They’ve used their sweep of the Red Sox to catapult themselves to 7.5 games ahead in the division. Not only will the Yankees win the division but they’ll finish with the best record in baseball.

In the American League Central I’m back to taking the Detroit Tigers to win this division. The Tigers are hitting the ball better and their starting pitching has continued to be strong. Plus, the White Sox really aren’t making any major push to take over first. One big push by the White Sox will put them in first, but i just don’t see it happening. And one big push by the Tigers could put them 6 games up. We’ll see which team makes a run first. The Twins, meanwhile, are 5 games under .500 and fading fast. If they don’t turn it around in a hurry then they’ll be done within a couple weeks.

In the American League West the Texas Rangers continue to play great baseball. But they’re still 4.5 games behind Anaheim. But they are on top of the Wild Card race. And that’s where the big change comes in for this week.

I like the Rangers to take the Wild Card over the Red Sox. The Rangers just took 2 of 3 from the Red Sox. The Red Sox are a bit of a mess right now and I don’t know that they can turn it around.

So, as things look right now, I like the Yankees, Tigers, Angels, and Rangers to make the playoffs.
