MLB: Games Growing in Importance

Posted on | August 15, 2009 | No Comments

As August grows older and older, baseball games take on more and more significance. Maybe that’s why the Yankees are finally playing like they should. Now if the time to put things together because before anyone knows it, it will be September and then October and the playoffs will be upon us.

Most teams have made their trades but there is still some waiver wire stuff going on. The White Sox and the Red Sox both took advantage of the Waiver wire to make their teams better.

Speaking of the Red Sox, they came back on the Rangers last night to win the game 8-4. This is the most important series going on right now. With the win the Red Sox have moved 1.5 games ahead of the Rangers in the Wild Card race. That was a big win for the Red Sox. If they lost they might be in serious jeopardy of being swept. Why? Well, because they now have Penny and Tazawa taking the mound the next 2 games. But it’s not like the Rangers have their best pitchers on the mound. But I like the Rangers offense more than the Red Sox.

Last night we saw a great pitching duel between Zach Grienke of the Royals and Jarod Washburn of the Tigers. The game ended in the bottom of the 9th inning when the Tigers’ Brandon Inge went yard. But the pitching performance the Tigers got out of Washburn (8 innings of 3 hit ball) is what the Tigers need.

The AL Central is now the closest race in all of baseball. It looked like the NL Central would be the closest all season but right now the Cards enjoy a 4.5 game lead. The Cubs finally broke their slide by crushing the Pirates yesterday. The Pirates coming to town is just what the doctor ordered for a stumbling Cubs team. But the Cards are playing the Padres so it might be tough for Chicago to gain any ground this weekend.

But every game is important right now. And the games will only get more important as the baseball season gets closer to it’s last 40 games.
