Last season’s Premier League runners up Liverpool take on Tottenham in what is clearly the opening weekend’s most intriguing fixture.
Liverpool had their unbeaten run in the Premier League broken last season by Spurs, who were only one of the two teams to beat the Reds in the league in 2008-09, along with now relegated Middlesbrough.
Harry Redknapp has sold Darren Bent to Sunderland, but has brought in Peter Crouch, Kyle Walker and Sebastien Bassong. With Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson both injured, Bassong is set to make his Premier League debut in central defence alongside Ledley King. Joining Woodgate and Dawson on the sidelines is Gareth Bale, who has a knee injury. Jermaine Jenas is a doubt with a calf problem.
Tottenham Hotspur form- last five games- all competitions
Spurs 3-0 Olympiakos ( Roman Pavlyuchenko, Vedran Corluka and Jermain Defoe )
South China 2-0 Spurs
Spurs 3-0 Hull City ( Robbie Keane*2, Aaron Lennon)
Spurs 1-0 West Ham ( Jermain Defoe)
Liverpool have lost midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid. Alvaro Arbeloa has also left for Los Merengues. Glen Johnson is expected to make his Premier League debut at right back, but new signing Alberto Aquilani will miss out due to injury. Captain Steven Gerrard pulled out of England’s midweek friendly against the Netherlands, and is also struggling to be fit for this game.
Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel should recover from their respective injuries, but the game is expected to come too soon for Danish defender Daniel Agger.
Liverpool have had a relatively poor pre-season, with only wins over Lyn Oslo and the Singapore national team to show for. They lost to Espanyol, Atletico Madrid and Rapid Vienna, and drew with St.Gallen and the Thailand national football team.
If Gerrard does not play, I’d back Spurs with their strong home record at White Hart Lane not to lose. A win might be difficult, but I can see them holding the Reds to a draw.
Verdict:- Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Liverpool ( Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch/ Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt)
