MLB: Some Quick Mid-August Baseball Thoughts

Posted on | August 14, 2009 | No Comments

As we get set to roll into another weekend of baseball, slowly the end of the season is creeping up on us. So, I thought I’d spend a post touching on a few different subjects.

Let’s start with the Boston Red Sox and Kevin Youkilis. How is it possible that Youkilis and Porcello each get 5 game suspensions? I know a 5 game suspension for a pitcher isn’t as bad as a 5 game suspension for a positional player, but still. Major League Baseball should be ashamed of themselves. Youkilis deserved at least a 10 game suspension and Porcello didn’t really deserve anything. He got ejected from the game and that was probably too much.

But Boston sits at the top of the Wild Card race. But they’re just a half game ahead of the Texas Rangers. And guess which 2 teams will be playing this weekend? That’s right. The Rangers and the Red Sox. It’s going to be in Texas too. This is a huge series.

Meanwhile, the Yankees have remained red-hot. They are looking like they will cruise to the best record in baseball. They keep playing to their potential and they just might win the division by double digits.

In the National League the Philadelphia Phillies and the Atlanta Braves will meet in the ATL. The Braves are 5 games behind the Phillies. But they’ve won 5 straight games and now they have the chance to seriously cut into the Phillies’ lead in the division. But the Phillies have won 3 straight games themselves. The Braves really have to win this series if they hope to win the NL East.

Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals are taking charge in the NL Central. They’ve opened up a 4.5 game lead over the Cubs. The Cubs have lost 5 straight games. They better turn it back around or what once looked like it would be close for the entire season could be decided by the end of August.
