MLB Selection

The first game of the season is a little over 24 hours away and I am overflowing with excitement. On Sunday, at 8:05pm EST, the Cleveland Indians are taking on the Chicago White Sox, who are at home. The line has moved around a little bit as sports bettors are starting to put down money. The Chicago White Sox opened at a $1.40 favorite, but now the lines are all over the place. The lowest line I found was -$1.17 at the Wynn in Las Vegas.
So how do we pick this game? I think many sports bettors bring last year’s memories along when deciding and this is not a good thing to do. The year is fresh and players have moved around. Players that over performed last year with not do so again and vise versa. This is the time of year when pitching will over dominate as hitters are adjusted. It’s also a time of the year where a semi-poor pitching outing can be turned into a nightmare. Tonight, we have two pretty good pitchers taking the mound in Sabathia and Buehrle—both are lefties.
I am looking for a game that is, by in large, a pitcher’s game for the first 6-7 innings. Both of these teams match up really well, but I feel Sabathia is the better pitcher here, even if just moderately better. I would normally give the home team some edge, especially on opening night, but the Indians are in their division and know the environment well. I don’t expect nerves to play any more of a factor than usual. One thing is clear; Sabathia will have to be on his game to pull this one out. I think he will and that’s why, I am making the Cleveland Indians my first pick of the season–+$1.10 and up is the current line.
