MLB: Looking at the American League in Early August

Posted on | August 3, 2009 | No Comments

Well, there is a battle going in in the AL East, the AL Central is a mess, and the West looks to be a two team shootout. Yes, the Yankees and the Red Sox are going to be battling each other for a while. And the Rangers are still staying within striking distance of the Anaheim Angels. But, I want to take some time and talk about the AL Central right now.

What are the Detroit Tigers thinking? They go and get Washburn? Yes, I like Washburn and he will make a really good Tigers’ rotation even better. But, the Tigers still need hitting. Adding Washburn will only mean the Tigers lose every 5th game 2-1 instead of 5-1. Seriously. How did Dave Dombrowski not go out and get a bat or two for this anemic offense? It’s unbelievable.

Meanwhile, the Twins and the Whiet Sox both got better. They both added parts they needed to be better. The White Sox got Jake Peavy and the Twins got shortstop Orlando Cabrera.

So, the Tigers are still clinging to a slim lead in the Central. And the schedule does favor them. They have played the fewest home games of any team in the Majors. And they are a far better home team. They also have Baltimore coming into town for 4 games and they’ll have their 3 best pitchers going in the first 3 games. However, if they don’t hit they won’t win.

So, don’t be surprised if the Tigers are out of 1st place next week at this time. I like the White Sox to win this division now.

In the East I like the Yankees and in the West I like the Angels. For the Wild Card I still like the Red Sox.

We’ll see how all of this plays out down the stretch. In fact, we’ll see where we’re at in just one week. Something tells me there will be some shake up.
