MLB: Boston Illegal

Obviously the title of my post refers to the recent report that David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez tested positive for steroids back in 2003. Pretty creative, right?
But I can’t believe the supposed outrage of some of the media and the supposed shock of people. Sure, Manny was a given since he just back from a suspension. But David Ortiz? Wasn’t he one of the guys that swore he was clean? Wasn’t he the one that always said all the good hitters shouldn’t automatically be suspected of taking steroids? Yes, he most certainly was the one. And that’s why some in the media were a surprised when they found out he too was taking steriods.
But you know what? I wasn’t surprised at all. You know why? Because over 100 players tested positive for steroids back in 2003. And that’s when they knew the test was coming! That’s probably a low number.
So, instead of being shocked or surprised when I hear another name, I simply file it away and continue to wait for the other 98 names (or whatever the number might be now).
I bet any baseball fan could probably sit down and make a fairly accurate list of many of the names. And there are very few players who would shock me. One such name is Derek Jeter. A class act like that would be shocking.
But please, let’s stop with singling out Boston and saying their World Series is tainted. Please. They were not the only team. Not even close. And it’s especially offensive to listen to Yankees’ fans slam the Red Sox. Have they forgotten about A-Rod?
Look, I’m no Red Sox fan. But let’s not get carried away. Take the best hitters on any team in 2003 and I guarantee over 50% of them were on the juice. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that over 75% of them were on steroids.
Such is life with baseball these days. It’s full of cheats. But if just about everyone was cheating, is it still cheating? Of course it is. But somehow it’s a form of fairer cheating. I know, that doesn’t make sense. But it makes about as much sense as this era of baseball.
