MLB: Greatness on the Mound and All Around

How awesome was Mark Buehrle for 45 innings? Well, he was perfect. He retired 45 straight batters and set a record in doing so. His streak was snapped when he gave up a walk to Alexi Casilla with 2 outs in the 6th inning. Up until that time Buehrle was working on another perfect game. Imagine if he had pitched back-to-back perfect games? But it wasn’t meant to be. And once he gave up that walk things quickly went down hill. He allowed one run in the sixth and then four runs in the seventh. He took the loss too.
Buehrle has been the lone bright spot for the White Sox over the last several games. After pulling even with the Tigers in the AL Central, the White Sox lost 3 of 4 to the Tigers and now they’ve lost two straight to the Twins. This makes things even tighter in the Central since the Tigers are in Texas and they still aren’t hitting the ball.
But there are some teams that are playing great baseball right now and one of those teams is the Texas Rangers. Another team is the Anaheim Angels. The race to win the AL West is beginning to look like a heavy weight fight. And the Boston Red Sox better be careful because winning the Wild Card no longer looks like a certainty. The Rangers are gaining on them really fast.
Over in the National League the Philadelphia Phillies continue to play lights out. They still have a 7 game lead and they’ve strung together another 4 wins. If they land Halladay or Cliff Lee (and I think they will) then they will be scary. The Dodgers will suddenly look like a team that’s just playing to make it to the NLCS because the Phillies will be all but guaranteed a spot in the World Series.
