MLB: It’s Back On in the AL East

Thanks to a sweep of the Tigers and a close win over the Orioles, the Yankees have now pulled even with the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. The Yankees are currently riding a a 4 game winning streak while the Red Sox are on a 3 game skid. The result is a tie atop probably the best division in all of baseball.

Of course, this is how it was supposed to be all year long. The Red Sox and the Yankees are the 2 teams in baseball who are willing to spend boatloads of cash on players. And they are both very talented teams. But the Yankees stumbled a little out of the gate and the Red Sox took advantage. Sure, the Sox had to chase down Toronto but once they did they’ve been on top of the division just about the rest of the time. Now the Yankees have joined them.

A while back I took the Yankees to win the division and I still think it will happen. The Yankees are getting clutch hitting and great pitching now. Granted the Orioles and the Tigers aren’t good hitting teams, but still. The Yankees have only given up 1 run in 3 straight games. That’s impressive. Eventually we’ll see if it’s all about good pitching or if it’s more about inept hitting.

But this should be a great race as the calendar prepares to flip to August. The media had always over-hyped this match-up but it’s beginning to look like it will live up to the hype this year. It’s like a flashback to a few years ago when the Yankees and the Red Sox always battled it out for the right to go to the World Series.

So, it truly is back on in the American League East. The Yankees have tied the Red Sox, and they may very well take over 1st place before the week is through.
