A few days ago I wrote that one of the biggest series this weekend was the Detroit Tigers visiting the New York Yankees. Both teams had their top 2 pitchers going and both teams were at or near the top of their division. Well, it turns out that although all 3 games were close, the Yankees were just a lot better than the Tigers. In fact, the Yankees ARE a lot better than the Tigers.

The Yankees swept the Tigers this weekend. Yes, they were aided by a couple bad calls from the umps – one in each game. But still, they are just a better team.

And you know what else? Exactly what I wrote about the Tigers a couple months ago is what will end-up causing the Tigers to finish 4th in their division. Yes, I mean 4th!

Look, the Tigers have the best starting pitching in the league. I might even argue they have the best starting pitching in all of baseball. But they don’t have a great closer. That hurts them but what really kills them is their lack of hitting.

Are you kidding me? 5 runs in 3 games? Ridiculous. And, as they often do, they once again made every pitcher look like a Cy Young candidate.

But enough of the negative stuff. Let’s look at the positive. Let’s look at how the Yankees got clutch hitting in each of the 3 games. Let’s look at how the Yankees are now just a game behind the Red Sox.

Now, let’s not go overboard though. Please, let’s not say something silly like Joba Chamberlain is going to be dominant now. Again, any and just about every pitcher looks dominant against these toothless Tigers.

But still, a sweep coming out of the All Star Break is awesome. And beating Verlander and Jackson back-to-back is amazing. And now the Yankees seem to be poised to take on the Red Sox and take over first place in the AL East.
