MLB: Looking Back at the All Star Game

The American League dominance continues.
Once again the AL beat the NL in the All Star Game. And, once again, it was a close game. But thanks to Curtis Granderson’s one out triple and Adam Jones’ sac fly, the AL won the game 4-3. The NL hasn’t won the game since 1996.
It was a fun game to watch, but nothing spectacular. To me, if you love baseball then you enjoy seeing all the best players in the game playing with each other and against each other. But it’s nothing too awesome and it certainly isn’t going to be something that you remember a few years later.
The one problem I do have with the game (albeit a small problem) is that Carl Crawford was named the MVP. For what?
Yes, he made a decent catch at the wall and robbed the NL of a home run. And it was a good catch. But it wasn’t a spectacular catch. It wasn’t as if he went way above the wall. And it wasn’t like he had to fully extend. He went back to the wall, had time to jump up, and grabbed the ball. It was a good catch. But I’ve seen similar plays made at every level of baseball. Seriously.
So what else did Crawford do to get the MVP? Well, he did go 1 for 3 at the plate but he didn’t drive in a run or score a run. So, it’s that catch that earned him the MVP?
Well, wasn’t Curtis Granderson’s triple just as much of a good play. He hustled to turn a sure double into a triple. Then he scored the winning run. Isn’t that at least as valuable? One saved a run and the other scored the winning run. And by the way, if Crawford doesn’t make that catch then Granderson’s run ties it up so it’s not a huge deal anyway.
Granderson should’ve won the MVP. Plain and simple.
But oh well, it’s just a little problem. Now there’s a day off, and we’re back in action tomorrow. Well, some teams are and then all the teams will be back in action on Friday.
