MLB: NL Standings at the All Star Break
In the last blog post I took my weekly at the American League standings and the teams at the top of each division. Now, as I do every single week, I’ll take a look at the National League standings and the top of each division.
Let’s begin with the National League East. This is a division that looked to have 4 really good teams in it at the beginning of the season. Who knows how things will turn out but right now it’s beginning to look like there’s only 1 good team – the Philadelphia Phillies. Certainly I don’t want to to count out the Marlins, the Braves, or the Mets just yet. But, thanks to a hot streak including a 5 game winning streak, the Phillies have opened up a 4 game lead.
In the NL Central things are still very tight and will probably stay that way all season. The St. Louis Cardinals have a 2.5 game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers and a 3.5 game lead over the Astros and the Cubs. The Cincinnati Reds are only 5 games back. So, there are a lot of teams that are near the top of the division. But, as I’ve written before, I really think this division will come down to a battle between the Cardinals and the Cubs.
Meanwhile, the NL West is getting more interesting with each passing week. The Dodgers are still firmly in control of the division but they haven’t built on their lead in the past couple of months. The San Francisco Giants are sticking right with them. And even the Colorado Rockies are staying within striking distance. This division is suddenly looking like one of the best divisions in all of baseball. Let’s see if this continues. But right now this division has the best team in baseball (record wise) and the top 2 Wild Card contenders.
Tonight’s the All Star game. Enjoy everyone!
