European champions Spain could sound a warning for the rest of the teams in the Confederations Cup if they hammer New Zealand in the mining town of Rustenburg on Sunday.
Vicente Del Bosque’s side, the current world no.1 team as per FIFA’s latest ranking list, have talent aplenty in their side, and are one of the favourites for the tournament, along with Brazil and Italy.
La Furia Roja hammered Azerbaijan 6-0 in their last friendly game, and the sublime passing skills of Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Fabregas and co. could see New Zealand being torn to shreds. No Marcos Senna and Andres Iniesta for the Spanish though- both are out due to injury. Upfront David Villa and Fernando Torres form an awesome twosome.
Spain form- last five games- Spain scorers in brackets
Azerbaijan 0-6 Spain ( David Villa*3, Albert Riera, Dani Guiza, Fernando Torres)
Turkey 1-2 Spain ( Xabi Alonso, Albert Riera)
Spain 1-0 Turkey ( Gerard Pique)
Spain 2-0 England ( David Villa, Fernando Llorente)
Spain 3-0 Chile ( David Villa, Santi Cazorla, Fernando Torres)
I think Villa could plunder some goals against the Kiwis. Check out the odds for him.
New Zealand ran the Italians close in their last international friendly, but the All Whites know they will be up against it when the Spanish meet them. New Zealand do have a physical advantage- almost all their players are above 6 feet.
Blackburn defender and skipper Ryan Nelsen is injured, and will not play in this tournament. Shane Smeltz, A-League player of the season, is their best hope for scoring goals, along with Chris Killen.
Italy 4-3 New Zealand ( Shane Smeltz, Chris Killen*2)
Botswana 0-0 New Zealand
Tanzania 2-1 New Zealand ( Shane Smeltz)
Thailand 3-1 New Zealand ( Kris Bright)
New Zealand 0-2 Fiji
Some very ordinary results in there, in comparison to what the Spanish have achieved. Spain will obviously start as favourites.
Match prediction:- Spain 3-0 New Zealand ( Villa, Torres, Xavi)
