MLB: Yanks and Red Sox Highlight Action
Posted on | June 9, 2009 | No Comments
The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox get set to play once again beginning tonight. The series opens up with the Yankees a single game ahead of the Red Sox. I think the Yankees are the better and the hotter team right now. However, I think the pitching match-ups favor the Red Sox.
Tonight it will be Beckett against Burnett. Beckett has been awesome for the Red Sox in his past few starts. I don’t see the Yankees getting to him very much.
Then tomorrow night will pit Wang against Wakefield. Wakefield is almost always solid for the Red Sox. If his knuckleball is hopping around then he’ll be tough for the Yankees to beat. This is especially true because the Yankees will send Wang to the mound. Wang had a horrible start to the season, went on the DL, and has pitched better since his return. However, he’s still not very good. So, I like the Red Sox to get Wang early and often.
Finally, the Yankees will have Ssabathia on the bump against Penny for the Red Sox in the final game of the series. I like Sabathia and the Yankees to take this game.
Of course, these games are never as simple as just which pitcher is going against which pitcher. And with the exception of tonight’s game (I think Beckett will dominate) these games could go any way.
But I do think the Red Sox take 2 of 3 and tie the Yankees going into the games against the National League this weekend. But then the Yankees will gain some separation again. The Yanks will handle the Mets while the Red Sox will get beat up by the Phillies.
But this will be an interesting Red Sox and Yankees series to keep an eye on. For once, this series isn’t pumped up too much by the media. There is actually something at stake. First place in the AL East is up for grabs.
