Wallace and Richmond part company

Posted on | June 4, 2009 | No Comments

The worst kept secret in AFL football was officially confirmed following the departure of Terry Wallace as coach of Richmond. He wanted to get them into the AFL Grand Final but in four and a half years at Punt Road, he couldn’t even get them into the finals. Their AFL results were consistently poor and they were mired in the bottom half of the AFL ladder. Finally one of the AFL’s proudest clubs conceded that enough was enough. It maybe should have made the call earlier, but it didn’t want to be accused of being a club that eats its coaches and is dictated to by the media. A caretaker will fill the position and then there will be a mad scramble for the new position. Wallace will get to observe all of this from the lofty comforts of the media.

This has been the biggest news of the week where besides that, Geelong and St Kilda stretched their unbeaten start to 10 games. For Round 11, the AFL fixture has tossed up Geelong going to Subiaco to take on the Eagles, while Hawthorn host Sydney. In the traditional Queen’s Birthday game, Melbourne will lock horns with Collingwood.

Over in the NRL rugby league, the highlight of the week is State of Origin. One of the traditions of it is that both sides do their best to imply that the other is the favorite. Currently NRL odds and most of the NRL betting is placed on Queensland. The Maroons are aiming for their fourth straight series win. As far as State of Origin goes, you can never really take NRL results into account. A player with poor club form can play outstandingly well for his state.

In the NRL results last weekend, St George smashed Penrith, the Warriors took care of the Tigers and the Knights had the better of the Bulldogs. It was a good weekend for the Sharks. They recorded just their second win of the year. They are still in last place, two points behind the Roosters, but the victory over Parramatta will give them a lot of confidence. This weekend the match of the round should be Brisbane travelling down to Melbourne to take on the Storm. These two have a healthy rivalry.

As is the case with the Ashes. Ashes 2009 is now just over a month of way. Much excitement is being generated with the thought of another dose of Ashes cricket.
