MLB: Yankees and Red Sox Flex Their Muscles

Posted on | June 3, 2009 | 1 Comment

Well, round 1 of the two big American League match-ups went convincingly to the American League East. Both the Yankees and the Red Sox took care of business and handled the Texas Rangers and the Detroit Tigers with relative ease. The Yankees won 12-3 while the Red Sox won 5-1.

The Detroit Tigers certainly had plenty of chances against the Red Sox but they just couldn’t come through in the clutch. They even had the bases loaded with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th innings. But more on the Tigers hitting woes in a minute.

Meanwhile, the Yankees used a huge 4th inning to blow away the Texas Rangers. The Yanks plated 7 runs in the 4th inning and then they coasted to the win. This brings up a possibly troubling trend for the Rangers. They just don’t play well against the division leaders in the American League. Obviously they have plenty of time to turn this trend around and they can begin turning things around tonight.

In Detroit, the Tigers have a legitimate shot at winning the AL Central and they could even win it all this year. They have really good pitching and their fielding is solid too. But the problem that they might have is they can’t hit. At least not consistently. With their line-up, the fact that this team has trouble scoring runs is a mystery. Of course, there is possible help on the way with Marcus Thames coming back from injury and Carlos Guillen hopefully returning from the injury list at some point this summer.

But right now, the Tigers aren’t stringing enough hits together and they aren’t getting timely hits. This is resulting in them only scoring 1 or 2 or even no runs in far too many games.

But if the Tigers do start hitting – and they have the line-up to hit – then look out! They’ll suddenly be a favorite to win the World Series.
