MLB: Wild Game in Minnesota
Posted on | May 29, 2009 | No Comments
It what looks like a ho-hum 3-1 Boston Red Sox win over the Minnesota Twins there were 4 ejections and the game was anything but boring.
I’m not sure what the home plate umpire was trying to prove but he was running anyone that looked at him funny.
It actually all started when it looked like the Twins had gunned down Red Sox player Jeff Bailey at the plate. It was a close play and it does look like Redmond might have missed the tag. But Redmond didn’t think so. He immediately jumped up and argued the call. He was ejected within seconds. Then Twins’ manager, Ron Gardenhire, came out to argue the call and the ejection. He was ejected too.
Well, the run counted and the Red Sox were up 3-1. That would prove to be the final score.
But before the inning ended, in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Red Sox got Jason Veritek and their manager, Terry Fancona, ejected. Vertitek got tossed for arguing balls and strikes and Francona got run for defending Veritek.
Wow. 1 inning and 4 players ejected. And there wasn’t even a fight.
Lost in all the ejections is the fact that the game had meaning. The Red Sox are now alone in 1st in the American League East. And the Twins failed to be able to gain any ground on the 1st place team in the AL Central, the Detroit Tigers.
So, we enter this weekend with the Red Sox a half game up on the New York Yankees and the Detroit Tigers 3.5 games up on the Twins and the Royals. The Twins will now play the Rays. The Royals will play the Whiet Sox and the Tigers will continue their 4 game tilt with the Orioles.
The Red Sox have a big series against the Blue Jays. Can the Blue Jays save their sinking ship? And the Yankees will take on the Cleveland Indians.
You’d think that the Tigers and the Yankees have the easiest match-ups. But we will see.
