MLB: A Day of Blowouts
Posted on | May 26, 2009 | No Comments
Wow. Has there ever been as many blowouts in a single day? Yesterday there were a ton of them. In fact, there were 4 huge blowouts yesterday. And by huge I mean games won by 10 or more runs. The Yankees spanked the Rangers 11-1, the Tigers throttled the Royals 13-1, the White Sox crushed the Angels 17-3, and the Dodgers nailed the Rockies 16-6. Though they were all blowouts, each game teaches us something about the baseball season.
The Yankees winning big over the AL West leading Rangers really shows us that New York is for real. It won’t be long until they’re in 1st place in the AL East. They’re putting it all together now. They’re getting pitching and hitting.
The Tigers game shows us that Detroit is for real and may be in first in the AL Central for a long time to come. But don’t expect tonight’s game to be the same. Zach Grienke is on the mound. The Tigers haven’t scored an earned run against him in the last 19 innings. Edwin Jackson will be on the mound for the Tigers. So this one has the potential to be a pitching duel.
The White Sox putting a hurting on the Angels points out that the Angels are struggling. It’s still too early to declare them in trouble, but they certainly don’t look good. This makes the Rangers chances of winning the West even more likely. But I would expect the Angels to turn things around soon.
Finally, the Dodgers winning easily reinforces the fact that they are the class of the NL West. They easily own the best record in baseball. Meanwhile, the rest of the teams in the division are below average. The result might just be a 20+ game lead in August. Sounds crazy but it’s possible. If not for a 10 game winning streak by the Padres, the Dodgers would just about be halfway there.
