Newcastle United vs Manchester United

Posted on | January 1, 2007 | No Comments

Manchester United travel to St. James’ Park to complete a very successful Christmas period. United up till now have taken maximum points in all their games in the Christmas period and they will be looking to continue on those results. Newcastle have lost their last two games in the premiership but both of those have been away from home and they have looked relatively good in them. They were surely unlucky to lose 0-3 to Everton and the score line definitely does not reflect the match. The Magpies have won their last 5 home games and will be hopeful that their home form continues against a high flying United side.

Manchester United could be without Rio Ferdinand who sustained a shin injury in the Reading match, but later went on to play the full 90 minutes. Ronaldo is likely to start the match, and the striking partnership of Louis Saha and Wayne Rooney will be restored after Saha being rested in the last 3 games. Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic will be back to boost the United squad after serving a one match suspension. Gary Neville is also likely to play after Ferguson denied reports that he needs a calf surgery.

Glenn Roeder could once again play Nicky Butt in the centre of defense due to the injury of Peter Ramage. Titus Bramble and Craig Moore are both out, which leaves the Magpies short of centre backs. Shay Given is fit again and will definitely play against the Red Devils.

Last season United won the corresponding fixture with Rooney and Nistelrooy getting on the score sheet. Manchester United will be looking forward to do the double again this season after they won 2-0 at Old Trafford in October.

An Asian Handicap bet on Manchester United (-1.0, -1.5) gets you good odds of 2.28. I expect Newcastle to score in the match so a bet on them to win either half is definitely a strong prospect. The odds for that are 2.75. If Ferdinand does not play, the United defense looks a bit shaky so a bet on both teams to score at 1.90 is not too bad either.
