MLB: Looking at the Races in the American League

We’re just past halfway through the month of May. So, now is a good time to look at the races. Today we’ll start by looking at the American League.
The American League East is looking even more interesting lately. The New York Yankees have played some good baseball the last 7 games or so. They’re currently on a 3 game winning streak and are finally back above .500. They’re also 4.5 games back. But the Toronto Blue Jays still lead this division by 2 games over the Boston Red Sox. The Tampa Bay Rays are 6.5 back and the Orioles are already pretty much out of it at 8 games back. I still like Boston to win this division but Toronto is starting to make me a believer.
In the American League Central, there is a great race going on. The Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City Royals continue to be in a virtual tie atop the division. The Minnesota Twins are a game back. The Chicago White Sox are then just 3 games back and the Cleveland Indians are only 5.5 game back. Again, this is a division filled with good teams, but no great teams. So, this should be a great race all season. Though I still think the Tigers might be able to pull away.
Over in the American League West the Texas Rangers are looking really good. They’ve won 5 straight and they’re now in front of the Anaheim Angels by 2.5 games. The Seattle Mariners have slipped all the way to 4.5 games back and the Oakland A’s are 6.5 games back. I still like Anaheim in this division. But Texas has been getting great pitching and they certainly have the hitting.
So, at this point in the season I’m going with Boston, Detroit, and Anaheim to win their divisions. For the Wild Card, we’re probably looking at the Rangers, the Yankees, or maybe the Blue Jays.
