MLB: Should These 3 Teams Hit the Panic Button?
Posted on | May 13, 2009 | No Comments
It’s only May. There are still about 125 games to play. The season is still young.
However, there are 3 teams who were all supposed to be very good and aren’t doing so well right now. Those three teams are all in the American League. They are the New York Yankees, the Tampa Rays, and the Cleveland Indians.
I’m already sick of writing about the New York Yankees. They haven’t played good ball just about the entire year. They are 6.5 games back (after losing to the Toronto Blue Jays last night) and they’re just 2.5 games from the basement. But they have so much talent, it’s hard to believe that they’ll be bad this year. Plus, this is what they often did with Joe Torre and then they would catch fire around June and blaze all the way into the playoffs.
But they don’t have Joe Torre anymore. And that might be the biggest key to this season. Joe Girardi looks like he’s in over his head. And the Yankees keep losing games that they should win once in a while. Still, it’s not quite time to hit the panic button. But that doesn’t mean Yankees fans won’t.
As for the Rays, they are obviously feeling a letdown from last year. They find themselves in a division with teams that got a lot better over the off season. They didn’t get much better. And they’re young and not used to handling being one of the favorites.
I think it’s too early to hit the panic button on the Rays but they are in trouble. This division is too good and I don’t see them getting much better.
Finally, it is time to panic for the Cleveland Indians. Sure, they’re in a mediocre division and they have that going for them. But they are in last place and playing horrible baseball. I don’t see that changing unless something drastic happens, and fast. They can get their bats going (and will at some point) but that alone probably won’t be enough.
