MLB: The Beat Goes On
Yesterday we spent our time discussing the troubles of the New York Yankees and the successes of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Well, last night those trends continued.
You know, it would be bad enough for the New York Yankees and Joe Girardi if the Joe Torre and the Dodgers weren’t playing so well. Being under .500 and losing 4 straight that includes 3 to the hated Boston Red Sox and 1 to the Rays. It would be bad enough that the Yankees are 5.5 games out of first and 2.5 from the basement of the division. It would be bad enough that another loss to the Rays would put the Yankees back with the Rays (a teams that played horrible baseball in the month of April).
But having Joe Torre in LA weaving his magic once again, makes everything at least 1000 times worse.
Because Joe Torre and the Los Angeles Dodgers broke the record last night. They’ve won their first 13 home games of the season. That has never been done in the modern baseball era. And the Dodgers have now opened up a 6.5 game lead in the NL West. No team in that division looks like they’ll challenge the Dodgers.
So while the Dodgers have won their first 13 home games, the Yankees have actually gone 6-6 at home. Not exactly how they envisioned it going with their new stadium. And all those expensive seats behind home plate that are empty every night, that’s not exactly how they envisioned it either.
Make no mistake about it. The Yankees are in trouble. If Torre were there you know they’d turn it around. But with Girardi, it not a given and it probably shouldn’t even be favored to happen. And the Yankees better not be counting on A-Rod as the savior. There’s a reason why he’s horrible in the postseason. He’s horrible under pressure. So, a great way to make him have a horrible season is to put the pressure on him to bring the Yanks back.
However, the Yankees still do have great starting pitching on paper. So, that can take them a long way. But will it be enough? We’ll see…
