MLB: The Night of Walkoffs
Posted on | May 2, 2009 | No Comments
One of the most exciting things in all of baseball is the walkoff win. Last night we had an entire handful of them. The Yankees beat the Angels whehn Jorge Posada hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth. The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland A’s when Jose Lopez singled in the bottom of the ninth, and Dodger’s Russell Martin drew a bases loaded walk to beat the Padres. That was actually a nothing – nothing pitcher’s battle before the walk occurred.
The Dodgers are now 8 games over .500 and they’re still 3.5 games up on the San Francisco Giants in the National League West. The Dodgers look much stronger than they were last year when they went to the playoffs. Unlike last year, when the Diamondbacks started off strong and then collapsed down the stretch, the Dodgers are very likely to run away with the division. The Giants are a solid team but they won’t be able to keep pace.
The best team in baseball so far this year is the St. Louis Cardinals. They’re 10 games over .500 and they’re 4 games up in the NL Central. I wouldn’t expect them to get knocked out of 1st this year either.
The most interesting division in baseball, as expected, is the AL East. The Rays are beating up on the Bostn Red Sox. The Yankees have suddenly won 4 in a row after losing 4 straight. The Blue Jays are still on top of the division and the Red Sox are just a game back. The Rays still have a lot of work to do but these past couple of games are certainly a start. They absolutely crushed the Red Sox 2 nights ago and last night they won by a comfortable 4 runs. So maybe the Rays will put together a run and get back within a game or 2 of first place (they’re 5.5 games back now).
This weekend there should be some great baseball games. And the Yankees-Angels and Rays-Red Sox are 2 of the best.
