MLB: Time to Start Getting Serious

Posted on | May 1, 2009 | No Comments

So now things start to get a little more serious. We’re now out of the month of April and into the month of May. And what we have are some teams that are a pleasant surprise and other teams that are an utter disappointment.

First, let’s take a look at the surprises. These are teams that weren’t supposed to be good but are at or near the top of their division. These teams include the Toronto Blue Jays, the Kansas City Royals, the Detroit Tigers, the Seattle Mariners, and the Florida Marlins.

The Blue Jays were picked to finish behind the Red Sox, the Rays, and the Yankees in the AL East. Yet here they are tied at the top of the AL East. Honestly I expect the Blue Jays to fade back behind the Yankees this month.

In the AL Central the Royals and the Tigers were both picked to finish at the bottom of the division. Yet here they are at the top – the Royals are a half game in the lead over the Tigers and the White Sox. The AL Central is a mediocre division and it’ll probably be a close race for most of the summer.

In the NL East, the Marlins looked like they were about to fall back but suddenly they’re back to a 2 game lead. Hmmm, reminds me of last year’s Rays. Every time they looked done they rose up. But I’ll hold off predicting the Marlins to be as successful as the Rays.

Finally, the Seattle Mariners are on top of the AL West. They have some talent on this team but they shouldn’t be able to compete with the Anaheim Angels. But that’s why they play the games. So we’ll have to wait and see how the Mariners (and the Angels) play this month.
