Did the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox really call a game because of rain the 7th inning and then plan an entirely new game? Why yes they did. Doesn’t make any sense but it happened. Shame on both teams and Major League Baseball.

Here’s what happened: The Red Sox and the Twins were scheduled to play a day night doubleheader. So when the rains came after the 7th innning, and the Red Sox had a commanding lead then both teams decided just to call it a game. But both teams are off today so they easily could’ve finished the first game and then played the second game today.

Of course the losing team, the Minnesota Twins, had to sign-off on this. And they did. Gladly, in fact. It was said that they had already checked out of their hotel and they didn’t want to go through the hassle of checking back in and then unpacking. Seriously? That’s all it takes to compromise your own pride and the integrity of the game? Shameful.

But let’s face it, the Twins were fine with ending the game early because it meant they’d get a day off and they’d also save the arms in their bullpen from pitching a couple more innings. The Red Sox were fine with for the same reasons, plus they get the victory. But they were also fine with it because it meant they could easily bring in the night game crowd and make their money. So the Red Sox compromised the integrity of the game for money (mostly). Shameful again.

But Minnesota is the big loser here. Not surprisingly, the Twins lost that night game. Why wouldn’t they? The message has been sent. One game doesn’t matter. There are more important things like not being bothered with checking into a hotel again!

I always thought the Twins were a blue collar, gritty team. I thought the entire organization was like that. But I was wrong. And now they join the short list of teams I always root against.

Finally, Major League Baseball should be ashamed of approving such a thing. They weren’t personally involved so they should’ve been able to look at everything objectively and tell them too bad.

But I guess there is no longer any such thing as integrity. As if we didn’t already know that when the good Commish turned a blind eye to steroid abuse several years ago.
