Toothless Tigers eat their own?

Posted on | April 23, 2009 | No Comments

After four rounds of the 2009 AFL football season the ladder is starting to take shape. Geelong and St Kilda sit on top of the AFL ladder with a perfect 4-0 record, while the winless Fremantle and Richmond are on the bottom. A lot of speculation has come onto embattled coaches Terry Wallace and Mark Harvey because of their poor AFL results and to date both sides are standing by their men. It remains to be seen for how long this will be the case.

Melbourne will be thrilled with its first victory of the season which came at the expense of Richmond. They will be looking to make it two in a row against the Adelaide Crows. As for the Tigers the AFL fixture pits them against North Melbourne in a game which they will do well to win. The Kangaroos are a warm favorite in the AFL betting.

The centerpiece of the round is the Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon. It has the intensity of the AFL Grand Final and is always a highlight of the year, since it began in 1995.  The winner of this game often has nothing to do with the relative form of both sides and it is usually a very hard game to tip, but Collingwood look to be travelling better at the moment.

The match of the round should be Port Adelaide against St Kilda. Both are playing great football, in particular the Saints. They won in Adelaide two weeks ago, so the travel shouldn’t be an issue for them.

Sydney stalwart, Brett Kirk, brings up his 200th game against the Fremantle Dockers this week. That should be more than enough motivation to get the Swans home.

Over in the Super 14, the NSW Waratahs are struggling. Their sluggish style of play could be tolerated while they were winning ugly, but now they have dropped two straight everyone has turned on them including the rugby odds. They end the season with three games in South Africa and you are not going to get many rugby tips for them winning any of those games.

The Brumbies are still trying to do as much as they can for the memory of Shawn Mackay who passed away a few weeks ago. They have won their last two and will travel to Wellington to take on the Hurricanes.

The IPL has started but without the participation of the Australian international players who are in Dubai to take on Pakistan. With Ashes 2009 getting ever closer, the focus is switching more and more to it. There has been some speculation whether or not Australian players should be allowed to play county cricket – does it allow them the chance to acclimatize to what the conditions will be like for the Ashes? As Andrew Strauss said, it also allows English players to find out the weaknesses of these players and if you have a weakness – it gets found out quickly in Ashes cricket – just ask Michael Bevan.
