MLB: Marlins Stay Hot

Posted on | April 20, 2009 | No Comments

Don’t look now but the Florida Marlins are 11-1 and they are an impressive 5 games ahead of all the other teams in the National League East. That put the Marlins ahead of the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, the New York Mets, and the supposedly improved Atlanta Braves. With it being only a couple weeks into the season, there’s obviously plenty of time for the Marlins to fall back. With 6 of their games being played against the lowly Washington Nationals, the Marlins’ schedule has certainly helped them. But still, 5 games is still a large lead, and it’s impressive at this time of the year.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers won their 8th straight game on Sunday. That put the Dodgers a game and a half up on the San Diego Padres. It also put the Dodgers at least 5 games up on the rest of the division. Unlike the Marlins, the Dodgers have to be favored to win that division. And it’s very possible that the Dodgers won’t ever give-up the division lead.

In the other division in the National League, the NL Central, the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals are tied atop the division. This will probably be a showdown throughout the year. Both of these teams are solid and either one of them can win the division. I still like the Chicago Cubs to win the division, but the Cardinals won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Meanwhile, over in the American League, the Blue Jays, the Royals, and the Mariners are all at the top of their divisions. But the Royals are tied with the Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox at the top of the AL Central. This is a crazy division. If the Royals can keep playing good ball then any team in this division could win the division. And with the Royals haven’t 3 great pitchers, they really could stay in the mix all year.
