MLB: Opening the New Yankees Stadium

Posted on | April 16, 2009 | No Comments

Last year the New York Yankees didn’t exactly closeout Yankee Stadium, the first and real one, the way they wanted to. The Yankees missed the playoffs and had to sit and watch as the Red Sox and the Rays battled it out for the right to go to the World Series. Today the Yankees will open the new Yankees Stadium and they hope they can have better luck than they had closing their old stadium.

The Yankees have a couple advantages as they get set to open their stadium. The first is that they are playing better ball. They’re coming off winning 2 straight against the Tampa Rays. The second advantage is that they are playing against the lowly Cleveland Indians. The Indians have opened the season with an abysmal 2-7 record. So the Yanks have a good chance of getting a win today.

The next series for will be against the Oakland A’s. So the Yankees might just be able to get on a roll. They should be able to win the series against the Indians and they should be able to handle the A’s as well. However, the Yankees pitching has to hold up. They are getting great pitching from AJ Burnett and Petite pitched well last night, but Sabathia, Wang, and Chamberlain need to get better.

As the Yankees prepare for their stadium opener they find themselves in 3rd place in the American League East. They trail both the Orioles and the Blue Jays. But they’re only a game and a half back. So, we’ll see if they can make that up quickly.

Meanwhile, it looks like the surprises in baseball will at least continue for a little while longer. The Florida Marlins still enjoy the best record in baseball. They are 7-1. And then the next best team in baseball is the Seattle Mariners. They have only lost 2 games and they’ve now opened up a 3 game lead in the AL West.
