MLB: Surprise Teams at the Top
Posted on | April 15, 2009 | No Comments
Have you seen the standing for Major League Baseball? Have you seen the teams at the top of each division? Scanning though them all, there’s really only one team that isn’t that much of a surprise. And that one team hasn’t won the World Series in over 100 years or something like that.
Of course, that team is the Chicago Cubs. They’re on top of the NL Central right now. They’re tied with the St. Louis Cardinals at the top. The Cards are a bit of a surprise. But the Cubs really aren’t. They have a solid manager and a decent baseball team. Whether they stay at the top of the division or not won’t be known for many months.
In every other baseball division, in both the American League and the National League, there is a surprise team at the top of the division. In the AL East the Baltimore Orioles sit atop the division. They’re followed closely by the Toronto Blue Jays. These were supposed to be the 2 worst teams in the division.
In the AL Central the Kansas City Royals continue to lead the division. They’ve been winning with pitching. But yesterday they broke out the bats and beat the Cleveland Indians 9-3. And what is up with the Indians? Yes, the 1-7 Indians who many picked to win the division. They are playing horrible ball right now.
In the AL West, the Seattle Mariners already have a 2 game lead. The Mariners actually have a decent team that could win this division. I still like the Angels here but the Mariners really aren’t that much of a surprise.
In the other 2 National League divisions, the Florida Marlins and the San Diego Padres sit atop the NL East and the NL West respectively. These are 2 of the worst teams last year. Now here they are at the top of their division.
How long will this last? Probably not much longer. But who really knows? I don’t know that anyone could’ve predicted that these teams would be at the top a little more than a week into the season.
