MLB: Thoughts on the Season So Far

There could be trouble in New York. And I’m not talking about the Mets who opened up their new park by giving up a homer and then losing the game. I’m talking about the Yankees. They are off to a less than stellar start. They are now 2.5 games back and a game under .500. But a bigger problem may be that one of their “star” pitchers isn’t pitching well at all. And I’m not talking about one of their newly hired stars either.
Chien Ming Wang was shelled for the 2nd time this season. And he’s only started 2 games so far. We’ve yet to see a good sinker come out of his hand. If he doesn’t have a good sinker then he is an average pitcher at best. So far this season, he looks like a pitcher that might not be in the Majors when June rolls around.
Back when the Yankees spent all those million on Johan Santana and Roy Halladay it looked like they would just have a dominating pitching staff. But now those signings are beginning to look like they were signings of need. If Wang keeps being this bad then the Yanks are quite so dominant on the mound. They are still way above average but they aren’t any better than the Rays or the Red Sox. And the Yanks needs to be better on the mound because they don’t have the offense that the Rays or the Red Sox have.
Meanwhile, in the other tow interesting series, the Detroit Tigers just might be continuing last year’s trend of playing badly against their division foes. And the Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 8-6. So they continue to play great ball. They enjoy a half game lead over the Orioles and they also have a game and a half lead over the Rays.
