MLB: Tragedy Hits Baseball

Somehow the spring always seems to make people a little happier. It’s a time of rebirth. A time when everything is new again. And baseball goes right along with all those feelings. The beginning of the baseball season is a new chance for all the MLB teams. And that chance will live on at least until summer rolls around.
But on this day, there is no joy in baseball, and it’s not because the mighty Casey struck out. And this lack of joy is much larger than just Mudville.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lost a rookie pitcher last night. Nick Adenhart was killed when a drunk driver ran a stop light and slammed into the car Adenhart was a passenger in. He was one of four people in the car. Two of his friends were dead before help arrived. Adenhart was still clinging to life but died later at the hospital as emergency surgery didn’t save him.
The accident occurred just hours after Adenhart had made his first start of the season. Adenhart went 6 innings and allowed no runs. Though he didn’t get the win (he took a no-decision) he pitched very well and looked to be on his way to a great rookie year.
Now he is gone.
There is no sense that can be made from a tragedy like this. And baseball knows it. Gone is a promising baseball career. But much more importantly, gone is a life. A life of a young man who was, by all accounts, a great young man.
Too sad.
But life must go one and so baseball games were played today. And they will be played tomorrow and on and on through October. And there will be a lot of cheering and a lot of great times for the players and the fans. But tonight, on this night, there is no joy to be had in baseball.
