Doncaster v Watford Preview

Posted on | April 3, 2009 | No Comments

Both of these team’s know that victories will all but guarantee their survival in this division, as they both sit next to each other in the table. Doncaster are in 15th place on forty nine points, while Watford are sat just one lower with two less points.

Doncaster have had a superb first season in the Championship although Sean O’Driscoll’s men have got to make sure they finish the job. It now looks extremely unlikely for Rovers to be relegated, but after getting themselves so close to a mid-table position, they need to find that form that saw them surprise everyone and exit the relegation places. They’ve now lost their last three games and while two of those were against promotion hopefuls Birmingham and Reading, O’Driscoll will know that it’s important to finish the season confidently for the benefit of the next campaign. They say that fifty points is the baseline for survival and with the Keepmoat side being just one point away from that target, you’d be a fool to bet against them returning back to League One.

It’s been a disappointing season for Watford considering their standing a few years ago, but they are another side who should just about stay in this division. Brendan Rodgers’ men are sat on forty seven points and with the Hornets being six clear of the drop zone; it looks as though it’ll be another season of Championship football for the Vicarage Road outfit. They’ve collected just two points from their last three games but with some seemingly simple fixtures remaining – again you’d be silly to gamble on their demise this season.

As for team news, Doncaster just have the one concern coming into this one as James O’Connor suffers an anxious wait to see whether or not he’ll be fit to play. Should he not have recovered in time, the club may decide to send him for surgery that would definitely end his season. With Brian Stock and James Coppinger also out for the campaign, that’s really not the news that Donny fans will want to hear. As for Watford, Brendan Rodgers will have Jon Harley and Jay DeMerit back in contention with the duo returning from suspension and injury respectively. Tommy Smith is also hopeful of featuring after recovering from a knee problem, although fellow striker Grzegorz Rasiak is definitely out.

They may have lost their last three games, but we’re tipping Doncaster to bounce back in this one. Sean O’Driscoll’s side have played attractive football all season and been far too hot to handle for most sides when they feature at the Keepmoat. Watford will put up a battling display and make it hard, but we’re going to predict the tight 1-0 home victory.
