Manchester United vs Manchester City

Posted on | December 9, 2006 | No Comments

The big Manchester Derby is upon us and we can surely expect a cracking game between the two teams. This will be the 146th Manchester Derby in the clubs history and a victory in this will take them 9 points clear of Chelsea who don’t play until Sunday against Arsenal. United came back from behind against Benfica to win 3-1 and progress to the knock out phase. Even though United are unbeaten at home to City in the premiership they have managed to win only once out of their last five meetings and that will surely be the worry for the manager. Their last win was in 2003 when they won 3-1. City are 12th in the league with 20 points and a win could push them to the top half of the table.

There are no big injury concerns for the Red Devils, with only Patrice Evra doubtful for this match after limping out with a calf injury in the Champions league match. The back four should pick themselves with Heinze replacing Evra. The formation that United play has been often changed by the change in personnel. We have seen Rooney play in the left midfield position and Giggs in centre midfield or sometimes even upfront. Manchester Untied will be best suited to play Ryan Giggs in the wings with Rooney playing just behind Louis Saha. This is by far United’s most potent attacking option.

City will welcome back Dietmar Hamann to the team, but he is not likely to make the starting line up. Sun Jihai is out with a hamstring injury while Trevor Sinclair also misses out. Manchester United will welcome back Smith and Park Ji Sung to the lineup after a successful return from injuries in the Manchester reserves derby match on Thursday.

United start out as favorites with odds of 1.33 for them to win it. I would go with Manchester City to win either half at 3.5, which is a risky bet but that’s the only way you will get decent odds. A 2-1 Manchester United victory sounds about right to me and that is at 8.0. The best bet in my opinion would be the one on Asian Handicap on City (+1,+1.5) at 2.075.
