Barnsley v Blackpool Preview

Although it doesn’t sound too sparkling on paper, this is one of the weekend’s biggest games with these two sides direct competitors in the relegation dogfight. Barnsley currently sit in 21st position and with Blackpool just two places and three points above them, defeat for either could be catastrophic.
It’s very hard to analyse Barnsley’s current situation as while the Tykes are only just outside the relegation zone, they do have three games in hand over a lot of their opponents. Should they collect maximum points from those games their worries will be over, yet should they fail to perform in them they’re in the same boat as everyone else down there. Recent form has been pretty inconsistent, with wins, victories and draws being scattered everywhere. In their last game they faced Birmingham and despite playing very well, they conceded a late equalizer to deny them all the points. However, new striker Michael Mifsud scored his first goal in that game and with fellow frontman Daniel Bogdanovic also scoring a couple recently, Simon Davey will be hoping that the Maltese duo have enough in them to fire his side up the league and to safety.
Blackpool on the other hand have at least started to get their season back together. The Seasiders went on a run of six games without a win but in the last couple of weeks they’ve grabbed some good results, with a home win over Norwich and a draw at Sheffield United coming their way. However, by no means are Tony Parkes’ men out of the relegation kafuffle. Just four points separate them from the drop zone and with the Tangerine outfit playing more games than most of their rivals; this one could go right down to the wire. Parkes has once again utilized the loan market this week and brought in Sheffield Wednesday winger Wade Small, although some people are still a little unsure over whether or not the Bloomfield Road outfit have the depth and quality to stay up.
As for team news, there’s not much new information to report for Barnsley who’ll once again be missing Anderson de Silva, Stephen Foster and Andranik Teymourian. De Silva is still absent due to compassionate leave, while Foster and Andranik are both still serving suspensions. As for the visitors, Wade Small is tipped for a start having joined the club on loan late this week. Brett Ormerod and Rob Edwards are set to return following injuries, although David Vaughan and Roy O’Donovan are both major doubts.
As for a prediction, we’ll go with the draw. It’s going to be a scrappy affair and with so much at stake, there’s not going to be many chances. Bearing that in mind, we don’t think there will be any goals either – 0-0.
