First leg result :- Inter Milan 0-0 Manchester United

Inter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has defensive issues to cope with as he takes his side to Old Trafford to meet Manchester United in the second leg of their Champions League knockout tie.

Nicolas Burdisso and Marco Materazzi injured themselves in Inter’s weekend win over Genoa and will not travel to England. Romania skipper Cristian Chivu is also out, and Walter Samuel is fighting against the clock in order to be fit for this game. Should Samuel not be fit, Mourinho will be forced to play Esteban Cambiasso in central defence alongside Ivan Cordoba. Another option is Nelson Rivas, but Inter can ill afford a mistake similar to the one the Paraguayan made against Sampdoria last week.

It is an odd reversal- when United visited the San Siro for the first leg, they had some defensive issues of their own too.

Inter Milan form- last five games- all competitions- Inter Milan scorers in brackets

Genoa 0-2 Inter ( Esteban Cambiasso, Zlatan Ibrahimovic)
Sampdoria 3-0 Inter ( Coppa Italia)
Inter 3-3 AS Roma ( Mario Balotelli*2, Hernan Crespo)
Inter 0-0 Manchester United
Bologna 1-2 Inter ( Esteban Cambiasso, Mario Balotelli)

Carlos Tevez was in stunning form as Manchester United routed Fulham to move into the last four of the FA Cup on Saturday. Ferguson has to decide which two of Berbatov, Rooney and Tevez must start in this crunch tie on Wednesday night. John O’Shea is likely to be handed the right back spot in the absence of both Rafael and Gary Neville

Manchester United form- last five games- all competitions- Manchester United scorers in brackets

Fulham 0-4 Manchester United ( Carlos Tevez*2, Park Ji Sung, Wayne Rooney)
Newcastle 1-2 Manchester United ( Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov)
Manchester United 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Inter 0-0 Manchester United
Manchester United 2-1 Blackburn Rovers ( Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov)

Jose Mourinho has an excellent record against Sir Alex Ferguson, but given the form United are in, and Inter’s problems in defence, I see this going only one way.

Verdict:- Manchester United 2-0 Inter ( Cristiano Ronaldo, Dimitar Berbatov)

I’ve got a feeling that the Premiership teams in the last 16 this week are going to regret the carousel that has seen managers like Mourinho, Ranieri and Ramos join continental rivals with a whole book of tricks to shut out English sides in matches.

What’s the betting on Robben, Vieira or Riise turning one of these ties?

    Cheers,

    Charlie

Juri, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion.

While Ferguson might have managed to get the better of Mourinho only once in thirteen games, I think United have enough firepower to go through.

@Charlie, some of the odds being offered on Robben, Vieira and Riise were quite good.

Riise and Vieira don’t score that often. Riise does have a powerful left foot though.

Real are out- lets see what happens to Inter and Roma tonight.
