NCAA: The New Rankings

Posted on | March 3, 2009 | No Comments

The new college basketball rankings are out and the UConn Huskies are once again the #1 team in the nation. After losing to the Pitt Panthers a couple weeks ago, the Huskies regained the top spot when Pitt lost to the Providence Friars last week. Now a regular season finale is set-up. These two teams will battle and the championship of the Big East just might be on the line.

The #2 team in the nation is now the North Carolina Tar Heels. They are firmly in position to grab a #1 seed in the Tournament. The Tar Heels are followed by the Pitt Panthers, then the Oklahoma Sooners and then the Memphis Tigers round out the top 5.

It will be interesting to see which one of these teams doesn’t get a #1 seed. UNC should be able to grab one of the seeds. I don’t see Memphis losing between now and Selection Sunday so they are in. As long as Blake Griffin stays healthy, then I don’t see the Sooners losing out on the #1 seed.

This leaves the final #1 seed for either UConn or Pitt. Obviously UConn has the inside track right now. But Pitt will have at least one and probably two more cracks at UConn. If one of the other three teams stumbles then it will be very likely that both Big East teams grab #1 seeds.

The second set of the five teams are Louisville, Duke, Michigan State, Kansas, and Wake Forest. These 5 teams could easily be swapped out for the next group of five teams. This is a group of teams that has the inside track to the #2 and #3 seeds. I can pretty much guarantee that at least three of these teams will lose in the first or second round of the NCAA Tournament.

We are down to one week left in the regular season (for most teams) and then we’ll have a week of conference tournaments. That will be followed by Selection Sunday. March is here and soon the madness will begin.
