Burnley v Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Burnley were a side who occupied the play off places for much of the first part of the season, only for miserable form around Christmas to pull them out and towards mid-table. They’re now just one point away from the top six although with Sheffield Wednesday aiming for their highest finish for a number of years; it certainly won’t be an easy task.
It looks as though Burnley have well and truly forgotten about their sticky period a month or two ago, which saw the Clarets slip from a safe play off position to mid-table. Results over the past few weeks have been pretty solid with Owen Coyle’s men drawing their last two against Norwich and Coventry after beating league leaders Wolves. This all means that the Turf Moor side sit in 8th place, trailing the top six by just one point. As well as a decent league campaign, the Clarets also have a cup tie with Arsenal to look forward to so it’s all looking up for Coyle and his men at the moment.
The previous fixture between these two sides was on the first day of the season and looking at that result, you’d have thought Sheffield Wednesday would be the side gunning for the top six. The Owls swept away Burnley in 4-1 fashion although there’s no doubt that their supporters will be very happy with how things are going, which is much different to the usual relegation struggle. However, despite their good league position, their form over the last couple of months hasn’t been sparkling. They’ve won just three out of their last twelve and with a few local derby defeats being thrown in there; the fans haven’t had much to smile about lately. Their last result was a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace though and the Hillsborough faithful will be hoping that will spark a charge for a top half finish.
It all looks good in the way of team news for the home side, with Owen Coyle reporting no new injury concerns. Influential winger Chris Eagles should now be involved after he recovered from an early chest infection scare. There’s a little more to report for Sheffield Wednesday who look set to be without Richard Wood who has a knee injury. Elsewhere, there’s slight hope that Akpo Sodje could make an appearance after a hamstring problem, while Lewis Buxton is now back in contention after serving a one match suspension.
As for a prediction, we’ve got to go for the Burnley win. The Clarets know they can’t afford any slip ups if they are to break into the top six and with current form reasonably good, there’s no doubt that they are firm favorites for this one – 3-1 Clarets.
