NFL: Free Agency Opens with More of a Whimper
Posted on | February 27, 2009 | No Comments
The NFL season never really ends. It goes from the Super Bowl to the combine to free agency to draft day to mini camps to preseason and so on. Each phase is nearly as interesting as all the others. This includes the opening of free agency when unrestricted players without a contract can sign with any team they choose.
Usually there is a big splash right away in free agency. And while there have been a couple big signings, mostly it’s been really quiet in the first day of free agency.
Not surprisingly Daniel Snyder and the Washington Redskins were first to strike in free agency. And, not surprisingly either, they overpaid.
The Redskins signed DT Albert Haynesworth to a 7 year 100 million dollar contract. That’s right – 100 million! They gave star quarterback cash to a DT. And they still don’t have a quarterback.
Does Dan Snyder realize that Haynesworth will now face two teams that have mobile quarterbacks? Does he realize the other team protects their quarterback about as well as anyone in the NFL? Apparently not.
It also seems as though Snyder doesn’t realize that the Redskins have a horrible offense that puts them at a disadvantage. Eventhough he’s paying Haynesworth quarterback money, Haynesworth obviously can’t play quarterback and therefore the signing won’t be all that advantageous.
The other big signing of the day was the New York Jets and new head coach Rex Ryan siging former Ravens linebacker Bart Scott. Scott if fairly young and he’s very good. But the Jets could’ve tried to sign Ray Lewis instead. But they chose Scott. So that should tell other teams a thing or two about Ray Lewis. Either he’s on the downside of his career or he’s asking for way too much money. Either way, Rex Ryan choosing Bart Scott should tell the rest of the NFL something.
Now we’ll see which teams are next to make a big splash in the free agent market.
