Wolves v Plymouth Preview

One of the most under pressure managers in the Football League at the moment is Paul Sturrock so this is perhaps the worst fixture he could have asked for. The Pilgrims are on a dismal run of form and with supporter’s wanting the Scotsman to resign, a trip to table topping Wolves isn’t exactly a blessing. However, Wanderers are also in a bit of a rut and Mick McCarthy knows that the pressure is on if his side are to keep their three point lead at the top.
Like all sides hunting for promotion, the story of Wolves has been something of a rollercoaster. They started the season absolutely on fire and looking somewhat unbeatable, but over the last month or two they’ve taken a turn for the worst. There was a time where it looked impossible for nearby sides Reading and Birmingham to catch them but now that’s completely not the case, with Mick McCarthy’s men now having their lead cut to just three points. That is mostly down to the last nine league games, which has seen Wanderers win just once. Some would say that they were lucky to get a point at home to promotion rivals Cardiff as well last weekend, with an absolutely disastrous goalkeeping error allowing them to equalize. With McCarthy’s men now facing a side who are far worse on paper and in even worse form, it’s a huge test and will be a key point in the race for the top flight.
Like we’ve said all along, Plymouth are one of the worst sides in the division in terms of recent form and that has resulted in Paul Sturrock coming under an increasing amount of pressure. The Pilgrims have won just three times in their last twenty one games and that has meant that having once been a play off side, they’re now one looking over their shoulders. Just three points separate them from the drop zone and as their fans have been so used to mid-table finishes over the years that certainly doesn’t make for good reading. They recorded a good 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday which went down well, but Sturrock will have to mastermind more than that if he is to convince the doubters.
In terms of team news, there’s not much to report for home side Wolves. Mick McCarthy has just one problem with goalkeeper Carl Ikeme out with a back injury, but other than that he has a strong squad to choose from. It’s a similar story for Plymouth who also only have the one piece of new team news. Having missed the last couple of months through a knee injury, striker Jermaine Easter has a chance of being included having recovered and begun training.
Despite their recent poor form, many people will still tip Wolves for this. However, Plymouth have even more at stake and they know that a defeat could spell the end of Sturrock’s tenure. With that, we’ll go for a hard fought 1-1 draw which will go down fantastically with the visiting fans.
