Friday the 13th lived up to its bad luck reputation in October. On October 13, 2006, President Bush signed the “Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006″. This law has been considered by many as a flagrant example of the trend to legislate not only morality, but the internet as well. The provisions of the law will not take effect until the summer of 2007, but already it has created major turmoil within the Online Gambling Industry.
The law does not ban online gambling nor does it prevent players from participating in online gambling activities. What it does effect is the transfer of funds from United States banks and other financial institutions to and from the online casinos. The intent of the law was to stop American players from participating in gambling activities that involved cash by pulling the rug out from under their ability to either fund their games, or withdraw their winnings.
The law has created a storm of protest from the millions of Americans who were involved to one degree or another with the online poker sites. The sites themselves, which are for the most part operating outside the United States, have reacted in a variety of ways. Some of the larger sites such as PartyPoker and 888 simply bolted at once, and stopped taking deposits or handling accounts for American players. Pokerroom, Noblepoker, and Royal Vegas are some other popular sites that have decided to suspend handling the accounts of American players.
Several of the biggest and most popular sites have ignored the ban. They are still accepting players from the U.S., and some are rather proactive in their intentions to continue to do so.
