Liverpool vs Reading preview

Posted on | November 3, 2006 | No Comments

Premiership newbies Reading face a stern test when they visit Anfield to play Liverpool on Saturday.

Liverpool beat Reading 4-3 in the Carling Cup not too long ago, and wil be looking forward to inflict another defeat upon the Royals. Rafael Benitez fielded an unchanged side for the first time in 100 games in the Champions League encounter against Bordeaux, and his squad responded with a 3-0 win over the French side. However, Luis Garcia will not figure in this game due to injuries. Craig Bellamy will join him because of lack of fitness. That means that Gerrard and Alonso will start in centre midfield, with Gonzalez and Pennant flying down the flanks. Mohammad Sissoko is on four yellows, and with Arsenal awaiting them next week, it is likely that Benitez will rest him.

Reading have hit a rough patch of late. They have lost their last three Premiership games and have the joint weakest defence in the Premiership along with Fulham and Charlton. Reading will welcome back Stephen Hunt but Graeme Murty continues to be sidelined. Reading’s three goals in the Carling Cup all came from crosses/ set pieces and Liverpool should employ Hyypia to contain their threat in the air. Leroy Lita caused Daniel Agger and Gabriel Palletta problems in the Carling Cup. He along with Kevin Doyle, will be the expected sources for goals. And you shouldn’t forget a certain Steve Sidwell.

Reading are on a bad run while Liverpool are improving. Plus this is at Anfield, which has been like a virtual fortress. Liverpool to win 2-0 or 3-0 nothing less than that.Kuyt, Gerrard and Crouch on the scoresheet.
