Portsmouth vs Liverpool preview-7th February

Posted on | February 6, 2009 | No Comments

Game : Portsmouth ( 16th-24 points) vs Liverpool ( 2nd-51 points)

Competition : English Premiership

Venue : Fratton Park, Portsmouth

Date : 7 February 2009

Kickoff : 17.30 GMT

Liverpool will aim to put the disappointment of their midweek FA Cup exit at the hands of Everton behind them and go to the top of the Premiership table, albeit temporarily, when they take on Tony Adams’ Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday evening.

Liverpool were dealt a triple blow by Everton in midweek. They were knocked out of the FA Cup, Lucas Leiva was sent off, and their talismanic skipper Steven Gerrard was injured. Gerrard is out of action for the next three weeks, and that will deprive Liverpool of their most influential player against Portsmouth. It also heaps more pressure on Fernando Torres, for the Spaniard, along with Gerrard, has played a vital part in most of Liverpool’s goals this season.

Torres is at 4.100 to score first during this game at 10Bet.

Xabi Alonso is also a decent bet to score. He is quoted at 6.100 at 10Bet to score any time during the game.

Liverpool form last five games- all competitions- Liverpool scorers in brackets

Everton 1-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea ( Fernando Torres*2)
Wigan 1-1 Liverpool ( Yossi Benayoun)
Liverpool 1-1 Everton ( Steven Gerrard)
Liverpool 1-1 Everton ( Steven Gerrard)

Portsmouth are on an eight game winless streak in the Premier League. Their last league win came against Blackburn in November, and last week, they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Fulham. Under pressure boss Tony Adams has bolstered his side with the acquisitions of Theofanis Gekas from Leverkusen and Angelos Basinas from AEK. Sol Campbell might be fit to play. The same goes for Croatian playmaker Niko Kranjcar. Winger Jermaine Pennant is ineligible to face his former club.

Portsmouth form- last five games- all competitions

Fulham 3-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Portsmouth 0-1 Aston Villa
Portsmouth 0-2 Swansea ( FA Cup)
Tottenham 1-1 Portsmouth ( David Nugent)
Bristol City 0-2 Portsmouth ( Peter Crouch, Niko Kranjcar)

Liverpool beat Chelsea earlier this season without their skipper and I think they can do the same here against a Pompey side dreadfully out of form. Liverpool 2-0 Portsmouth, with Torres and Xabi Alonso scoring.
