NFL: Super Seven for Wild Card Playoffs

Posted on | January 1, 2009 | 1 Comment

Now that the playoffs have started, naming the seven best teams in the NFL will be a little easier. This time of the year, any playoff team (with the exception of the Cardinals and maybe the Chargers) is a good team.

So let’s get to the rankings, which are largely based on the playoff setting:

1. New York Giants

Super Bowl champs and the #1 seed in the NFL. But they aren’t without their flaws.

They’ve lost three of their last four games. And their pass rush is not good enough to win it all. You can mark that down.

But heading into the playoffs we’ll give them the #1 ranking.

2. Tennessee Titans

The #1 seed in the AFC. They aren’t without their flaws either. But they did beat the #3 team on this list when it mattered most.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers have as good of a shot at winning it all as any other team. They will certainly be a tough out for someone.

4. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers are a good team. Everyone knows that. Yet I’m not completely sold on them. I haven’t been all season. And, to be honest, I won’t be sold on them until they make it to the Super Bowl.

5. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts are red-hot right now. No other team is in the playoffs is… except maybe the Miami Dolphins.

The Colts have all the pieces to make a run. But I don’t see them winning on a cold field in Pittsburgh. It’s possible they can avoid such a fate but not probable.

6. Minnesota Vikings

They barely beat the Giants when the Giants played their 2nd stringers for most of the 2nd half.

Yet, they are the #3 seed in the NFC. That counts for something.

7. Miami Dolphins

One things for sure: The Dolphins will play a solid game or two in the playoffs. They are well-coached and they give it their all every single game.

How refreshing!

The Titans should be #1. I don’t feel the Giants are as strong this year.
