NFL: Playoffs Getting Set

Posted on | December 22, 2008 | No Comments

With just one week left to go in the NFL regular season, we are starting to see things work themselves out for the playoffs. However, there is still a lot to be decided. In fact, there are more spots left up in the air then at any other time that I can remember.

Here is what we know:

In the NFC the New York Giants have won the NFC East and clinched the #1 seed in the NFC, thanks to their overtime win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night.

The Arizona Cardinals have won the NFC West despite the fact that they are playing horrible football right now and may finish with just an 8-8 record.

We also know that the Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers are in the playoffs. However, the winner of the NFC South is not decided. If Carolina wins or Atlanta loses then Carolina wins the South. Atlanta can win the South is they win and Carolina loses.

For the final Wild Card spot, the Dallas Cowboys have to beat the Philadelphia Eagles. If the Cowboys lose and Tampa Bay wins then Tampa would go. If both Dallas and Tampa Bay lose then perhaps Chicago or Philadelphia would go to the playoffs.

In the AFC, the Tennessee Titans have won the South and the #1 seed. The Pittsburgh Steelers have clinched the AFC North. The Indianapolis Colts have clinched a Wild Card.

For the West title, the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos will battle it out next Sunday night.

For the AFC East, the Miami Dolphins will battle the New York Jets. If the Dolphins win then they take the division. If the Jets win and the Pats win then the Pats will take the division. A Pats loss couple with a Jets win will give the division to the Jets.

The last Wild Card will go to the Baltimore Ravens if the Ravens win. If they lose and the Pats win (but don’t win the division) then the Pats get the Wild Card. There are some other scenarios to play out as well, but we’ll try to keep this fairly simple for now.

While it’s hard to be sure about each and every race, one thing that is sure is the fact that next week will be a crazy and a lot of fun.
