Racing Santander vs Manchester City preview

Game : Racing Santander (Esp) vs Manchester City (Eng)

Competition : UEFA Cup Group A

Venue : El Sardinero Stadium, Santander, Spain

Kickoff : 19.45 GMT

Date : Thursday, December 18, 2008

Already qualified Manchester City will aim to top Group A when they visit Spain to taking on Racing Santander in their final Group A game.

Mark Hughes’ side have been poor domestically, but have done well in Europe where they have seven points from three games. Should City win this game, they will top the group. The lowest they could fall to is second place, which they’ll want to avoid because it means facing a Champions League third placed finisher in the round of 32. Skipper Richard Dunne has not travelled with the side. Benjani and Daniel Sturridge miss out due to injuries, while Brazilian forward Jo has contracted a virus which rules him out of this game.

Manchester City- last five games ( all competitions)

Man City 0-1 Everton
Fulham 1-1 Man City ( Benjani Mwaruwari)
Man City 0-0 PSG
Man City 0-1 Man United
Schalke 0-2 Man City ( Stephen Ireland, Benjani Mwaruwari)

Man City away form last five games ( most recent first)

Racing need to win to have any hopes of qualification. Schalke, who are currently third, have four points and have played all their fixtures. Racing have two points from three games, same as PSG. A win, combined with a result better than or equal to PSG’s ( if they beat Twente) is what Racing will need to qualify at Schalke’s expense.

Racing have never let in more than one goal at home in any UEFA Cup game.

Racing Santander- form- last five games ( most recent first- goalscorers for Santander indicated in brackets)

Almeria 1-1 Racing Santander ( Ezequiel Garay)
Racing 1-1 Athletic Bilbao ( Pepe Colsa)
Atletico Madrid 4-1 Racing ( Mohammed Tchité)
PSG 2-2 Santander ( Pepe Colsa, own goal)
Racing 3-0 Espanyol ( Iván Marcano, Óscar Serrano, Jonathan Pereira)

I think this will end a 1-1 draw, with Wright Philips and Pepe Colsa scoring.
