NFL: Giants Sliding and the Lions Winless

Let’s talk about two teams who were on a completely opposite trajectory a couple weeks ago but now have something in common. And let’s talk about the fact that the New York Giants are suddenly looking very ordinary and the Lions are still trying to win a game.
First, the defending champion New York Giants. They were absolutely cruising a couple weeks ago and they looked like they were clearly the best team in the NFL. Then star receiver Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg and Brandon Jacobs went down with a knee injury. What followed was a bad loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and then a huge loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
What was most alarming about the losses is how horrible their offense was. And this problem won’t be fixed with the return of Jacobs either. Defenses no longer have to worry about the Giants passing game. And that allows teams to stack the box and stop the run.
Now, let’s talk about the Detroit Lions. The 0-14 Detroit Lions. Can they win a game?
After watching them on Thanksgiving I was convinced that they wouldn’t win a game. They quit in that game against the Tennessee Titans and they quit early in the game. Certainly that type of effort wouldn’t get them anywhere near a win.
But these last two weeks – against the Colts and the Vikings, the Lions have fought hard and they nearly won each game.
Now they have the New Orleans Saints this Sunday followed by the Green Bay Packers.
I don’t think they will beat the Saints because Drew Brees will be able to put up enough points. But the following week, against the Packers, I think the Lions may very well win that game. The Packers are a mess and this would be a fitting end to a disappointing season.
Imagine the reactions in Packerland? Imagine what people will say about Aaron Rodgers?
It won’t be pretty. But the again, if the Lions go 0-16 that would be even uglier.
