Sheffield Wednesday v Bristol City Preview

At the start of the season simply no-one would have thought that Sheffield Wednesday would be sitting a whole five places above Bristol City. The Owls were tipped for a season of struggle yet that hasn’t been the case at all and they sit in an impressive 10th position. City on the other hand have been disappointing and now occupy 15th following miserable form.
It wasn’t too long ago that Wednesday were in a poor run of form themselves, with Brian Laws’ men picking up just one win in a streak of six games at one point. However, recently their season has been turned around and after being tipped as relegation candidates, the Owls now sit on thirty two points which is twelve from the dreaded bottom three. Laws was rewarded with a new contract not so long ago and now they’re sat just two points away from the top six, there’s plenty of positivity at Hillsborough at the moment. They’ve picked up ten points from their last four games and by the looks of things; they’ll be safe from relegation in the not too distant future.
Bristol City on the other hand really need to pull their socks up and Gary Johnson has now said that he will look to recruit new players during the January transfer window. After performing so well last season, the Robins have been hugely disappointing through this campaign and have just one win to their name in their last ten outings. Big money signings such as Nicky Maynard have failed to make an impact and with that, Johnson will just be desperate to see the back of 2008 and hit the January sales. There’s no doubt that City still have a decent team on paper and probably just need one or two new faces to freshen things up.
It wasn’t that long ago we were saying that Sheffield Wednesday had a full squad to pick from, yet all that’s changed in the last few weeks. Brian Laws has some massive selection headaches with nine players set to miss Saturday’s game. American full back Frankie Simek is one of those absentees and after only just returning following a twelve month spell on the sidelines, that’s a massive blow for the Owls. It’s not much better for the visitors either and Gary Johnson has various problems of his own. Jamie McAllister, Nicky Maynard and Louis Carey are all major doubts, meaning that Johnson may have to give starts to some of the club’s fringe players.
This game features two teams in completely different form and we can see Sheffield Wednesday nicking all the points. The Owls have been very impressive of late and we expect this to continue against a Robins side who don’t know where their next win will come from – 1-0 Owls.
