Blackburn Rovers vs Liverpool preview

Posted on | December 3, 2008 | No Comments

Game : Blackburn Rovers vs Liverpool

Competition : English Premier League

Venue : Ewood Park (Blackburn are the home side)

Date : Saturday, Dec 6, 2008

Kickoff : 15.00 UK time

Struggling Blackburn Rovers face league leaders Liverpool at Ewood Park on Saturday, knowing that a loss for them and a win for West Bromwich Albion on Sunday could see them slip to the bottom of the table.

Rovers have not won in their last nine Premiership games, and the pressure is mounting on Paul Ince. They have the worst home record in the Premiership, having picked up only five points out of a possible 21. Injuries to David Dunn, Steven Reid and Vincenzo Grella have not helped their cause. Although they did show some spirit against Portsmouth, they were destroyed by Man Utd, and only some poor defending by Patrice Evra allowed them to reduce the margin in the last few minutes.

Last five games Blackburn Rovers ( all competitions)

Sunderland 1-2 Blackburn- Carling Cup ( Roque Santa Cruz)
Blackburn 1-2 Sunderland ( Christopher Samba)
Tottenham 1-0 Blackburn
Portsmouth 3-2 Blackburn ( Matt Derbyshire, Tugay)
Manchester United 5-3 Blackburn ( Matt Derbyshire, Benni McCarthy*2)

Blackburn Rovers last five games at home

Blackburn 1-2 Sunderland ( Christopher Samba)
Blackburn 0-2 Chelsea
Blackburn 1-1 M’Boro ( Benni McCarthy)
Blackburn 0-0 Bolton
Blackburn 0-2 Man Utd

Liverpool lead the Premier League, but Benitez’s side cannot afford to drop points like they did against Fulham and West Ham. Consistency is what is required to get a Premiership title, and Benitez must have impressed upon his side the need for it. Fernando Torres, Fabio Aurelio, Martin Skrtel and Lucas Leiva are on the injury list.

Liverpool ( Last five games – all competitions)

Tottenham 4-2 Liverpool – Carling Cup ( Damien Plessis, Sami Hyypia)
Bolton 0-2 Liverpool ( Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard)
Liverpool 1-0 Marseille ( Steven Gerrard)
Liverpool 0-0 Fulham
Liverpool 0-0 West Ham

Liverpool- last five away games

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Liverpool ( Robbie Keane)
Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool ( Xabi Alonso)
Tottenham 2-1 Liverpool ( Dirk Kuyt)
Tottenham 4-2 Liverpool – Carling Cup ( Damien Plessis, Sami Hyypia)
Bolton 0-2 Liverpool ( Dirk Kuyt, Steven Gerrard)

Corresponding fixture last season

Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool’s inability to score is becoming a bit of an issue, but Blackburn are low on morale, and I think they would let in a goal or two. Liverpool 2-0 Blackburn, with Gerrard and Robbie Keane scoring.
