If somebody had told me at the beginning of the season that the match between Spurs and Rovers one month before Christmas would feature two teams in the relegation zone, I’d have laughed. But amazingly as it is, 18th placed Blackburn Rovers will travel to London to play Harry Redknapp’s Spurs, who are one place and one point behind them in the table.
Tottenham suffered their first defeat under Harry Redknapp last week to Fulham, losing 2-1 at Craven Cottage. Under Redknapp, Spurs have looked a rejuvenated outfit, but their poor start to the season under Ramos means that they are still second from bottom. Croatian playmaker Luka Modric is out of this clash with a torn groin muscle. Giovani Dos Santos’s ankle keeps him out too. Central defender Jonathan Woodgate his recovered from his virus. There are no other major worries for Redknapp who won five and drew one in first six games as Spurs manager.
Blackburn Rovers have been slightly better away. They have picked up eight points away in comparison to five at Ewood Park. Rovers were excellent in the first half against Sunderland last week, but paid for their inability to score as the Cats roared back in the second half to post a 2-1 win. Jones and Cisse scored for Sunderland, while Christopher Samba sent in Blackburn’s opener. Paul Ince has a lengthy injury list- Steven Reid, Brett Emerton, David Dunn and Vincenzo Grella. However skipper Ryan Nelsen and Martin Olsson return to the first team this week. Benni McCarthy has returned from his father’s funeral, and might start alongside Roque Santa Cruz.
A win for either of these sides would move them out of the drop zone. However five of the last seven meetings between these two sides have ended in draws. The corresponding fixture last season saw Rovers win 2-1, with Christopher Samba smashing home an injury time winner after McCarthy had cancelled out Robbie Keane’s penalty. Any body fancy David Bentley to score ? The 2007 Blackburn player of the Year is at 10.100 at 10Bet to score first and at 3.800 to score anytime. I’ll predict a 2-1 win for Tottenham, with Darren Bent, David Bentley and Benni McCarthy scoring.
