Roy Hodgson’s Fulham face a tough test when they travel to Anfield to play Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. The Cottagers are currently in 10th place in the league, but their wretched away form, which has seen them take just one point from five trips away from Craven Cottage, ensures that Liverpool are firm favourites for this clash.
Liverpool comfortably beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 last week ( Yours truly got his prediction right !- check the archives) with Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt scoring. Gerrard, who pulled out of England’s midweek clash against Germany with an injury suffered in the Bolton game, is a doubt for this one. Martin Skrtel is expected to be back around Christmas time. Robbie Keane’s shoulder injury is however not too serious, and he should be fit for this one. Liverpool have never lost at Anfield this season, winning five and drawing one in their six league games. They are the only unbeaten Premier League club at home this season.
Fulham’s recent surprise home wins over Newcastle and Tottenham has seen them jump to 10th with seventeen points. Sixth placed Hull are just four points ahead. While their home form has been as good as Liverpool’s, they have only managed one point away from home- a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth, which was secured thanks to a late equaliser from Clint Dempsey.Ki Hyon Seol, Andranik Teimourain and Diomansy Kamara are injured for Roy Hodgson’s side. Defender Aaron Hughes should overcome an eye injury that forced him to withdraw from the Northern Ireland side in midweek. Fulham tend to capitulate in the last quarter of the game- a fact which will worry Roy Hodgson because Liverpool also tend to score at that time. The corresponding fixture last season was won 2-0 by Liverpool, with the goals coming in the 81st and 85th minutes.
Liverpool to win this by a solitary goal, with Fernando Torres scoring. Fulham have been decent at the back this season, and should not concede too much if they keep things tight.
